The Dr. Uzor Cares Foundation has provided financial relief to an Enugu family struggling to settle a hospital bill incurred after the Caesarean Section delivery of their newborn baby.
The intervention, which took place on Monday, September 14, 2026, was disclosed in a statement signed by Hon. Mrs. Uche M. Eze, Secretary, Board of Trustees of the Foundation, following the Foundation’s payment of ₦250,000 towards the family’s outstanding medical expenses at God’s Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital and Maternity, Awknawnaw, Enugu.
The beneficiary, Mr. Chijioke Ekwueme, an indigene of Awhum in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, had earlier appealed to several Non-Governmental Organisations for assistance after his wife underwent a Caesarean Section, leaving the family with a medical bill they could not afford to settle.
Ekwueme said he discovered the Dr. Uzor Cares Foundation through its website and decided to apply for assistance after his appeals to several other organisations yielded no response.
According to him, the Foundation was the only organisation that responded to his appeal, describing the intervention as a timely answer to his prayers at a difficult moment for his family.
The statement by Eze said the Foundation, upon receiving Ekwueme’s application, contacted the management of God’s Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital and Maternity to obtain the official details of the family’s medical expenses.
The total hospital bill stood at ₦400,000, of which Ekwueme had paid ₦44,000, leaving an outstanding balance of ₦356,000.
Eze said the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Foundation, Rt. Hon. Dr. F.S.A. Uzor, subsequently approached the hospital management with a proposal for the Foundation to pay ₦250,000 towards the outstanding bill, on the condition that the hospital would waive the remaining balance.
The hospital management accepted the proposal, thereby relieving the family of the outstanding financial obligation and enabling them to leave the hospital without the burden of the unpaid balance.
The Foundation subsequently issued a cheque of ₦250,000 in favour of the hospital, which was formally presented to Ekwueme at the Foundation’s office by Dr. Festus Uzor.
While presenting the cheque, Dr. Uzor congratulated Ekwueme and his family on the safe arrival of their newborn baby, expressing happiness that the Foundation was able to intervene at a significant moment in their lives.
He also prayed for God’s continued blessings, good health, prosperity and peace upon the family.
Receiving the support, Ekwueme was overcome with emotion and shed tears of joy as he expressed profound appreciation to Dr. Uzor and the entire Board of Trustees for responding to his appeal when his family was in dire need of assistance.
He thanked the Foundation for not only listening to his story but also taking practical steps to reduce the financial burden created by the medical emergency.
Eze further disclosed that a friend of the Foundation, Chief Ozo Joel Eke (Obegolu), also supported Ekwueme with a cash donation of ₦50,000.
According to her, Eke, while making the donation, expressed appreciation for the humanitarian work of the Dr. Uzor Cares Foundation and encouraged the organisation to continue its service to humanity.
The Foundation said the intervention came at a crucial moment for the Ekwueme family, allowing them to concentrate on the wellbeing of the mother and newborn rather than the financial pressure associated with the medical emergency.
Eze said the intervention was part of the humanitarian activities of the Dr. Uzor Cares Foundation, through which individuals and families facing difficult circumstances receive practical support at critical moments.
She said the Foundation’s response to Ekwueme’s appeal, coupled with its engagement with the hospital to secure a waiver of the remaining balance, underscored the importance of compassion, friendship and goodwill in providing relief to families in distress.
The Foundation congratulated Mr. and Mrs. Chijioke Ekwueme on the arrival of their newborn and wished the mother and child good health, happiness, peace and a fulfilling journey ahead.
